Graduate Teaching Assistant Development Grants

Graduate Teaching Assistant Development Grants help departments and colleges improve their development, support, and recognition of graduate teaching assistants. The purpose of these grants is to advance graduate teaching assistant professional development, thereby enhancing undergraduate student learning.

Graduate Teaching Assistant Development Grants are made possible by the Center for Teaching Excellence, the Graduate School, and the Office of the Provost.

Grant criteria:

  • Evidence that the project satisfies a need that is currently not being met by other departmental/college programs or is an improvement upon an existing program;
  • Evidence that the project is specifically directed toward helping graduate teaching assistants reflect on their teaching by (1) analyzing their teaching, (2) documenting their teaching, and/or (3) conducting research on their teaching;
  • Evidence that the project fosters systemic or departmental change and serves to reach a broad audience;
  • Evidence that the project helps improve student learning at the University of Maryland; and,
  • Evidence of departmental/college support for the project.

Suggested project areas:

  • Development and/or implementation of departmental peer observation and consultation programs;
  • Development and/or implementation of departmental teaching resources for graduate teaching assistants;
  • Development and/or implementation of departmental teaching portfolio workshops;
  • Development and/or implementation of graduate teaching assistant learning communities;
  • Development of scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) projects. For examples of SoTL projects, please see:

Applications are generally due in the first week of December each year.
