University Awards and Programs
Disability Issues Award
The President's Commission on Disabilities Issues sponsors awards to members of
the university who have made significant contributions to improving the quality
of life for disabled persons at the University of Maryland at College Park. For

Distinguished International Service Award
This award, sponsored by the Office of International Affairs, is designed to
recognize significant contributions to the development of international programs
at the University of Maryland at College Park. Nominations are accepted from all
members of the faculty and administration. The main criteria for selection are
the scope and importance of the contribution to the development of international
programs, along with a distinguished professional career.
The award is presented at the annual International Affairs banquet. Deadline for

Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award
Sponsored by the Office of Faculty Affairs, this award honors tenured members of
the faculty who, as men and women of outstanding scholarly accomplishment,
combined with excellence in teaching, personify our image of the professoriate.
The purpose of this program is to recognize successful scholar-teachers and to
enable them to share their achievements and expertise with the university at
large.
Distinguished Scholar-Teachers will be called upon to participate in one or more
programs for faculty or students in which they will share their expertise in
establishing productive research programs and in developing successful teaching
methods and approaches. They will also make a public presentation on a topic
within their scholarly discipline. The award carries an honorarium of $5000 to
support the Distinguished Scholar-Teacher's professional activities. For more

Distinguished University Professor
This formal title denotes an academic honor of highest distinction and is
awarded to a limited number of our most accomplished professors. Nominees should
be established scholars, held in the highest esteem by professional colleagues
nationally and internationally, whose contributions have had a significant
influence on their discipline and perhaps beyond. The title is accompanied by an
annual honorarium of $5000 to support the awardee's scholarly activities. For

General Research Board Awards
The General Research Board (GRB) sponsors five programs to support or enhance
faculty research projects. For more information on these programs, call the
Graduate School at 405-4175.
GRB-Distinguished Faculty Research Fellowship
The Distinguished Faculty Research Fellowship is of two types. One type of
fellowship allows recipients to pursue one year of full time research and
scholarly work to complete a major project. Up to five academic year fellowships
may be awarded. These fellowships are available to Associate Professors and
Professors who apply to and must be nominated by their Colleges. Candidates who
apply to GRB for a Semester Research Award may also be nominated for a
Distinguished Faculty Research Fellowship.
Each College may nominate up to three candidates. The four largest Colleges,
Arts and Humanities; Behavioral and Social Science; Computer, Math and Physical
Sciences; and Life Sciences, may have one additional nomination. No more than
two awards will be made to any one college. All Fellows will be required to
disseminate the results of their research to the campus community through a
graduate seminar colloquium, and/or other forum, within one year of the
completion of the fellowship. In addition, all Fellows will be required to
present a one hour seminar on their project during the Fall as part of The
Graduate School Distinguished Research Fellow Seminar Series.
Recipients are expected to be free of all committee duties during the year of
fellowship. However, it is desirable that Fellows remain in residence at the
College Park Campus to interact with their colleagues and graduate students on
their scholarly work. Recipients are also expected to spend a minimum of one
year at the University upon the completion of the fellowship. Award amounts are:
$20,000 to fellows' departments for full professors; $18,000 to fellows'
departments for associate professors; $5,000 additional to support the
professional activities of the recipient.
A second type of fellowship, open to all full-time Professors and Associate
Professors, is intended to honor and support emerging academic leaders whose
body of scholarly work is judged outstanding. Awardees receive an unrestricted
grant of $5,000 per year for two years. Nominations may be made by Deans,
Department Chairs, and Directors.
GRB-Semester Research Award
This award enables a faculty member to devote full time to a research or
creative project during one semester. All tenured and tenure-track faculty
members are eligible.
The faculty member continues to receive his or her regular salary and is awarded
$500 to support research expenses. Funds are provided to the recipient's
department to be used for faculty replacement.
GRB-Summer Research Award
This award provides a stipend in the form of summer salary for one or two months
to enable faculty members to pursue research during the summer. All tenured and
tenure-track faculty members are eligible. Assistant professors are encouraged
to apply. In a given year, a faculty member may apply for a Summer Research
Award or a Semester Research Award, but not both.
GRB-Research Support Award
This award is designated for research materials, minor equipment, and other
expenses essential to research projects. Book subsidies are also available when
the publisher indicates that publication would otherwise be impossible. Funds
are not provided for the payment of consultant's fees or for travel outside the
state. Departments are expected to provide funds on a cost sharing basis. All
tenured and tenure-track faculty members are eligible.
CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) Award
This award provides summer funding for creative and performing arts activities
for tenured or tenure-track faculty.
IBM/UMCP Distinguished Faculty Research Fellowship
This award supports a faculty member for a residency at an IBM Research Center.
The period of support can be one or two semesters during the 1996-97 academic
year. The GRB will provide funds to the recipient's department to cover the cost
of faculty replacements. The recipient will receive an additional $5,000 for
research-related expenses.The IBM Fellow will disseminate the results of the
research to the campus community through a graduate seminar, colloquium, or
other forum. In addition, the Fellow will present a one-hour seminar during Fall
1997 as part of the Graduate School Distinguished Research Fellow Seminar
Series.
Institute for Instructional Technologies
Offered for the first time in 1995, this institute, sponsored by the Center for
Teaching Excellence and the Computer Science Center, offers a select group of
faculty members instruction and hands-on practice in the most current
technologies for use in instruction. Included are email communications, internet
information, the AT&T Teaching Theater, electronic publishing, and PowerPoint

International Travel Fund
Funds are available to support air travel by faculty members for research that
has the potential of establishing or developing links with foreign scholars,
organizations, or institutions. Application deadlines are February 15, May 15,

Inventions of the Year Awards
The Office of Technology Liaison sponsors Invention of the Year Awards. There is
one award in each of three categories: Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and
Information Sciences. All inventors for the previous calendar year are eligible.
The winning invention is chosen from the disclosures presented to the Office of
Technology Liaison during the previous calendar year. An independent panel of 12
judges, 6 on campus and 6 off campus, vote anonymously for the winners using the
following criteria: the status of the technology, the status of the licensing,
and the potential overall benefit to society.
The awards are made at an annual reception held each spring and consist of an
engraved plaque and $500 for each invention, divided equally among the

Minority Achievement Award
The President's Commission on Ethnic Minority Issues has established achievement
awards to recognize individual faculty, staff, students, as well as units that
have made outstanding contributions to the University's equity efforts. A
nominee from the faculty must show accomplishment as a faculty member, and must
have been active on campus and in the community on behalf of improving the
status of ethnic minorities. For information, call 405- 5803.
Meyerhoff Center for Jewish Studies Awards

Samuel Iwry Faculty Fellowship
The fellowship provides a summer stipend of $5000 to support faculty research.
This fellowship is available only every other year. Jewish Studies core faculty
and affiliate faculty are eligible.
Ulpan Akiva Fellowship
This fellowship is available to any UMCP faculty member who would like to study
Hebrew or Arabic (note: to study Arabic, the applicant must already know
Hebrew). Students go to Ulpan Akiva in Natanya, Israel, to study during the
summer.
Outstanding Service to the Schools Award
The award recognizes professional service to the schools as an essential and
valued component of our mission as the flagship campus of the University of
Maryland System. Faculty and staff are eligible, and should have contributed
professional expertise to the issues and problems of prekindergarten through
twelfth grade education. The deadline for submissions is the first week in

Outstanding Woman of the Year Award
The President's Commission on Women's Issues sponsors this award honoring a
compelling record of significant contributions to the improvement of the quality
of women's lives. Candidates will have been a member of our university for at
least five years, and will have demonstrated excellence in one or more areas of
professional or community leadership, extraordinary service, national
recognition for research or literary achievement, outstanding administrative
achievement, or excellence in teaching, advising, or mentoring.
A plaque is presented to the recipient of the award at a special ceremony during
Women's History Month. The recipient then serves on the Executive Committee of
the President's Commission on Women's Issues for one year.

President's Medal
This award is the highest honor bestowed on a member of the university
community. The recipient of this award will be a member of the community with an
exemplary record of sustained and acknowledged contribution to the quality of
life at the university. The candidate's career should be distinguished by a
dedication to the fulfillment of the university's goals and mission, by
professional accomplishments, and by university service. Particular emphasis
will be placed on contributions that have had a wide-ranging and enhancing
influence on the entire university community. The deadline for nominations is

Women of Color Award
The President's Commission on Women's Affairs Subcommittee on Women of Color
recognizes the accomplishments and contributions made by women of color to the
minority community at the University of Maryland at College Park. Nominees
should be women of color; faculty, staff, or students; individuals who have made
extraordinary contributions to the university's minority community. For

Women of Influence Award
The Committee on Undergraduate Women's Leadership (CUWL) sponsors the Women of
Influence Award to honor the outstanding achievements and significant
contributions of University of Maryland Women. Women of Influence, including one
faculty or staff member, will be recognized for their efforts to improve the
University of Maryland community and/or a neighborhood, place of worship, local
or national government, or other constituent group. The deadline for application

College and Departmental Awards
College of Agriculture and Natural Resources
The following awards are presented during the annual College Spring Honors
Convocation. Requests for nominations for all awards are made on January 15,
with a deadline for submission to the Honors Committee by February 15. For

Junior Faculty Award
Candidates must be full-time tenure track faculty members for a period not to
exceed ten years from date of initial appointment in an academic department,
regional research and education center, or county extension office. Candidates
must have clearly established themselves as excellent faculty members with
exceptional accomplishments in teaching/advising, research, and/or extension
education. Nomination statements should focus on creativity and innovations of
the candidate and provide evidence of the quality of instruction, advisement,
research productivity, professional service and/or impact of outreach programs,
as appropriate for each nominee. Although candidates need not excel in all areas
of faculty activity, they should be clearly superior in at least one area of
work. Awardees receive a plaque and an honorarium in recognition of their
accomplishments.
The Director's Award for Extension Excellence
This award is given annually by the Maryland Cooperative Extension Service to
outstanding Extension field faculty. The purpose of this award, which is
presented at the Annual Extension Conference, is to recognize an Extension Agent
or Regional Specialist for innovative, creative, and superior programming at the
county level. The three prerequisites for this award are: the recipient must
have completed a minimum of five years of employment as an Extension Agent or
Regional Specialist with the Maryland Cooperative Extension Service; the
recipient must be working as a Maryland Extension Agent or Regional Specialist
at the time of the award; and the recipient must be an effective educator with
demonstrable results in innovative program development. Awardees receive a
plaque and an honorarium in recognition of their accomplishments.
The Dean Gordon Cairns Award for Distinguished Creative Work and Teaching in
Agriculture
The Cairns award is the premier award to recognize faculty members of the
College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, including the Maryland
Agricultural Experiment Station and the Maryland Cooperative Extension Service
faculty in Plant Biology and Entomology, who make outstanding and creative
contributions. This award is available to all college faculty involved in
teaching, research, and/or extension education in academic departments, at
research and education centers or in county extension offices. Nominees should
be those individuals who are leaders in the initiation and development of
creative ideas leading to enrichment of the learning process and/or discovery of
new frontiers in agriculture and related fields. Although candidates need not
excel in all areas of faculty activity, they should be clearly superior in at
least one area of work. Nominees should be outstanding contributors to the
programs of the College and be clearly among the most outstanding faculty in the
college. An honorarium and plaque are given to awardees.
College of Behavioral and Social Sciences
Award for Excellence in Teaching Mentorship
This award was established within the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences
in 1994 as a result of a gift from a College alumnus. The award is made each
year to a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding contributions as a
mentor of undergraduate students and colleagues about undergraduate matters.
Nominations are solicited from students, staff, and faculty in the College.
Faculty must have at least three years of full-time service to be eligible. The
recipient also conducts a seminar or other college-wide activity related to
mentoring as a condition for receiving the $1,000 award. For information call

Teaching Excellence Award
The College offers faculty and graduate teaching assistant awards for
demonstrated excellence in teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Nominations are solicited from departmental teaching committees. Faculty
awardees receive $1000 and graduate teaching assistants receive $500. For

College of Business and Management
Krowe Teaching Awards
The College of Business and Management Teaching Committee gives awards in the
following three categories:
* Outstanding innovation in a course by a
professorial faculty member.
* Outstanding teaching by a professorial faculty member.
* Outstanding teaching by a Ph.D. student.

College of Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences
Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching
The award is given to one faculty member each year who demonstrates outstanding
qualities as a teacher. Candidates are nominated by students. For information,

Computer Science Department
Outstanding Faculty Teacher Award
One award is made each year to a member of the faculty of the Department of
Computer Science who shows evidence of commitment to teaching. The Department's
Undergraduate Education Faculty Committee chooses the recipient, based on
student nominations and evaluations and on other evidence of the quality of

College of Education
Vernon E. Anderson Distinguished Faculty Award
The Vernon Anderson Distinguished Faculty Award is presented to a faculty member
for outstanding service to the College of Education, the University, and the
schools. Together with the Alumni Association, the College presents this award
at the Vernon Anderson Lecture each spring. The award is in the form of a
crystal display and the recipient's name is added to the College plaque. Faculty
and alumni are invited to submit nominations for the award by 1 March. For

A. James Clark School of Engineering
Senior Faculty Teaching Award
The award is based on appraisals by colleagues and students and honors
significant contributions to undergraduate and graduate teaching, innovative
classroom techniques and classroom materials, responsiveness to student needs,
and the ability to motivate students to learn. A plaque and a significant cash
award are presented at spring commencement. One award is presented each year to
an Associate Professor or Professor with more than ten years full-time teaching

E. Robert Kent Outstanding Teaching Award for Junior Faculty
The award is based on appraisals by colleagues and students and honors
significant contributions to undergraduate and graduate teaching, innovative
classroom techniques and classroom materials, responsiveness to student needs,
and the ability to motivate students to learn. A plaque and a significant cash
award are presented at spring commencement. One award is presented each year to
an Assistant Professor or Associate Professor with fewer than ten years
full-time teaching experience at the time of nomination. For information, call

Faculty Service Award
All faculty members are eligible for this award, which recognizes service
contributions including: esprit de corps; innovation in developing a curriculum
or special courses; service on committees; advising of student groups; giving
lectures to the campus and outside community; unpaid consulting for College
colleagues; recruitment activities and student advising; participating in open
houses, alumni activities, and similar activities. A plaque and a significant
cash award are presented at spring commencement to the year's awardee. For

College of Health and Human Performance
The following awards are presented annually by the College of Health and Human
Performance at the College's May commencement ceremony. The recipients are
presented with a personalized plaque and their names are added to a nameplate on
the permanent plaque that is on display in the Dean's Office. Nominations are
solicited each year from the department chairs and faculty. For information,

The Doris Sands Excellent Teaching Award
This award is presented to a faculty member who has been evaluated by the
department chair, peers and students as being an excellent teacher in his or her
area of expertise. The award carries an honorarium of $200.
The George F. Kramer Practitioner of the Year Award
This award is presented to a faculty member who has been recognized for
transforming theory into practice, that is, for applying knowledge in a
practical setting.
The Jerry P. Wrenn Outstanding Service Award
This award is presented to a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding
service to the college and university community. Special attention is given to
noteworthy advising at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
The Muriel R. Sloan Communitarian Award
This award is presented to a faculty member who has made a significant
contribution through outreach programs to the State of Maryland and surrounding
communities. Special emphasis is given to programs designed to assist the public
school systems in achieving the overall mission of educating and graduating
students.
The HLHP Research and Development Award
The newest award in the College, established for the 1994-95 academic year, is
presented to a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding work in the area
of research and development through acquisition of grants, published papers, and
presentations at professional meetings.
College of Life Sciences
The College of Life Sciences sponsors four awards for faculty. For information,

Junior Faculty Awards
The award recognizes junior faculty in the College who have shown exceptional
accomplishment in teaching and/or research, thereby establishing themselves as
excellent faculty members.
Research Awards
All tenure-track faculty members in the College are eligible. Candidates should
be actively involved in a solid research program in basic or applied sciences
which has gained significant national and international attention. The awardee
will have made a valuable and innovative research contribution to science.
Teaching and Course Development Awards
All members of the instructional faculty may be nominated. Candidates must be
outstanding teachers, clearly demonstrating exemplary ability as evidenced by
peer review and student evaluations, or by innovation in course or program
development and content.
Service Awards
All faculty are eligible for this award, which recognizes exemplary contribution
toward the well-being of the College's students, staff, or faculty; the
university community; or the citizens of the State of Maryland.
University of Maryland System Awards

Board of Regents Faculty Award
The Board of Regents Faculty Award was recently developed by the Council of
University System Faculty (CUSF) in order to publicly recognize distinguished
performance on the part of faculty members, and to place faculty achievements
before the public on a regular basis. Eligible faculty include all full-time
faculty employed by the University of Maryland System, who have distinguished
themselves in the areas of teaching, research and scholarship, and service.
Three awards in each of the three categories (teaching, research, and service)
will be given annually.
The Regents Professorship
The Regents Professorship was established by the Board of Regents of the
University of Maryland System in order to recognize one or more faculty members
whose record of scholarly achievement and potential for truly exceptional
service to the System and its institutions warrants appointment to this most
prestigious rank in the University System. Appointment to a Regents
Professorship is made by the Chancellor upon recommendation by one or more of
the Presidents of University of Maryland System institutions. A modest monetary
award, to be used for travel, research or publication costs, or personnel and
equipment costs, accompanies the appointment. Criteria for appointment include
national or international recognition for achievements in the arts, the sciences
or the professions, and; eligibility for appointment to the rank of professor at
one or more institutions of the University System.
Regents Professors may participate in the advisement and/or instruction of
undergraduate students; present an annual public lecture or performance at one
of the institutions of the University of Maryland System; or participate in
other scholarly activities that will enhance some aspects of the University of
Maryland System and some of its components. This may include such activities as
curriculum development (formal or informal courses), faculty development,
citizen outreach, or organizational enhancement.
University of Maryland System Faculty Development Fund
The UMS Faculty Development Fund supports faculty development in the area of
teaching. Priority will be given to those projects planning to use the expertise
and resources that exist within the UMS institutions. The projects must involve
at least two UMS institutions, provide a timetable with activities and a plan
for follow-up activities at respective institutions after the project year, and
show evidence of institutional commitment. $10,000 to $15,000 is provided for
6-10 projects; no single project may receive more than $2,500.
Wilson H. Elkins Professorship
This professorship is awarded for varying terms up to three years. Candidates
must have a superior record of achievement in an academic or professional
discipline; must demonstrate the desire and ability to lead and inspire
undergraduate and graduate students in the full range of learning situations;
and must demonstrate evidence of significant achievement beyond their
traditional discipline, but with a scholarly and professional relationship to
the academic enterprise at the University of Maryland System.
