Abstract 2003-2004

Asian Americans in Washington DC
Proposed by Dae-Young Kim and Lisa Rose Mar, Asian American Studies Program

We seek support from the 2003-2004 Improvement of Instruction Grant to develop a new upper-level CORE diversity course that explores the migration of Asian Americans to Greater Washington metropolitan area. The proposed class will examine migration from a number of different perspectives and methodologies. We believe that combining social science and humanities perspectives will greatly enrich our students' understanding of immigration, a key American phenomenon. The course will bridge various disciplines and more importantly, will expose cross-disciplinary research methods skills to students.A course that focuses on Asian American immigration to Greater Washington also provides a comparative approach to the study of immigration in urban centers and how local conditions and structures affect migration and adaptation patterns.Another aspect of our curriculum involves
linking faculty research and undergraduate and graduate teaching with community service. Students will be exposed to community organizations and opportunities for internships. Finally, students will work in teams to develop web content that conveys what they learned in a format useful to K?12 and university educators, public policy makers, business, journalists, and social services.
