Mid point Evaluation
Using
Mid point Evaluation
Research on
classroom assessment techniques and classroom climate indicates that getting and
using student feedback throughout the semester improves teaching and learning.
This is consistent with student comments such as these:
"When we fill
out end-of-semester evaluations on teachers and courses, it doesn't do us much
good. Our class is over. If we could give feedback when it might do some good --
during the semester -- that would be better."
The mid point
evaluation form is designed for this purpose. Teachers can give this form, to be
filled out anonymously by all students in a class, at any point during the
semester -- usually it's done about half way through. Students hand in the form
and the teacher and T.A.s (if applicable) review the forms and summarize the
comments. Then they discuss how to respond and how to communicate back to the
class what they have learned from the feedback and what they might change -- or
what can't change but with explanations as to the reasons.
Both teachers
and students who have used this technique report great satisfaction and improved
communication. It helps everyone to feel involved in a mutual improvement
process, and resulting satisfaction is usually increased for all. Note: it is
important to report back your responses and reactions to the class as soon as
possible after forms are completed by the students.
