Large Classes: Resources
The Large
Classes Teaching Guide was first sponsored by the Office
of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. As part of the
campus initiative in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI),
the CQI project focused on a persistent problem area for
academic programs in many disciplines--the challenge of
providing high quality educational experiences to
undergraduates in large lecture classes. This guide was
one of the
recommendations of the CQI team in order to provide a
resource to help teachers improve their work in the
challenging environment of the large lecture course.

Teaching
Large Classes With the Web - Christy Desmet
After constructing and using this web site for teaching
a large lecture class of English 231, "Beowulf to
Milton," Desmet surveyed the students' attitudes toward the
technology used. This web page records the process of
constructing the web site and the results of that survey
after students had used it for a quarter. There are
different ways to use the Web in the classroom. Some web
sites are controlled by the teacher and aim to provide
the students with information or other kinds of extra
materials. Some are constructed by the students, and
reflect the process of learning. Others are
self-contained courses, often taught as
distance-learning courses. Included in this web site are
examples of different kinds of class web sites, the
computer questionnaire used, the results of the computer
questionnaire, and her conclusions.
