| Distinguished Lecture:
Dr. Jay Labov, National Research Council
“The Evolution Controversy and the Increasing Importance of Teaching About
the Processes and Nature of Science”
 |
Jay Labov is senior staff member of the National
Research Council’s Center for Education. Dr. Labov is the Senior Advisor
for Education and Communications, splitting his time between the Center
for Education and the National Academies’ Office of Communications. In
this capacity, Dr. Labov leads an institution-wide effort to leverage
the National Academies’ work in education by helping to make more
deliberate connections between the work of the Center for Education, the
National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and the
program units of the National Research Council. |

This presentation will summarize the various approaches
that have been taken across the U.S. to limit the teaching of evolution or
to introduce “alternatives” into science classrooms and what recent court
cases may mean in helping to shape discourse about these issues in the
future. One of the reasons that this debate is likely to continue in some
form is because many people do not have a deep understanding of the
processes, nature, and limits of science and we will consider ways that
scientists might address these issues.
